Delhi-NCR Weather Update: Light Rains Bring Relief to the Capital, Check IMD Forecast, AQI, Temperature & More

Delhi-NCR Weather Update: The people of Delhi-NCR woke up to light rain and pleasant weather on Sunday morning as dark clouds hovered over the region. After days of high humidity and scorching sun, the rain brought much-needed relief, washing away the dust and cooling the city’s air.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued a nowcast warning earlier in the morning around 10:00 AM, predicting rain in the coming two hours. The showers, though light, created a calming atmosphere across many parts of Delhi and its surrounding areas.

What IMD’s Nowcast Warning Says

Delhi-NCR Weather Update

According to the IMD’s Delhi Regional Meteorological Centre, light to moderate rainfall is very likely to occur in many parts of the NCR region, including Gurugram, Manesar, Charkhi Dadri, Loharu, Kosali, Mahendargarh, Sohana, Rewari, Narnaul, Bawal, and Nuh in Haryana. In Rajasthan, Pilani, Bhiwadi, and Tizara were also under the radar for moderate showers.

The IMD also mentioned that light rainfall or drizzle, accompanied by light thunderstorm and lightning, is expected across several places in Delhi, Modinagar, Pilakhua, and Hapur in western Uttar Pradesh.

Despite the showers, there is no significant rainfall forecast for the next 5 to 6 days. However, Delhi is likely to witness short spells of light rain during the day and over the next few days.

Current Weather Conditions in Delhi

As of 11:10 AM on July 13, Delhi’s Safdarjung observatory, the city’s main weather monitoring station, recorded a maximum temperature of 33°C and a minimum of 27°C. IMD predicts that the maximum temperature may fluctuate between 35°C and 37°C, while the minimum may hover around 25°C to 27°C.

Interestingly, the minimum temperature on Sunday is expected to remain 1 to 2 degrees Celsius below normal, providing a slight break from the usual muggy mornings.

Relative humidity in the city was recorded at 86 percent, contributing to a humid but comfortable environment after the showers.

Air Quality in Delhi: Improvement with Some Exceptions

The rain not only cooled down the temperatures but also helped slightly improve the air quality. Most monitoring stations across Delhi registered AQI in the “satisfactory” category.

However, some pockets like Sonia Vihar, Mundka, Shadipur, Wazirpur, and Pusa recorded AQI readings over 100, pushing them into the “moderate” category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data.

Delhi’s overall AQI was recorded at 85, which is considered satisfactory, especially for a city known for its persistent pollution problems. Light rain often helps in settling down dust particles and reducing pollutants in the air.

What’s Ahead for the Capital: IMD’s Forecast

The IMD’s extended forecast for Delhi suggests partly cloudy skies with very light to light rain in isolated areas over the next few days. Thunderstorms and lightning may accompany these light showers in some pockets, but no heavy rainfall alerts have been issued for Delhi at the moment.

This means that the capital is not expected to receive any prolonged or intense rainfall at least for the coming week. However, the short spells of rain could continue to offer occasional relief from the heat and high humidity.

Orange and Yellow Alerts for Other States

While Delhi may not see heavy rainfall in the coming days, the IMD has issued orange alerts for several other states, including Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, warning of heavy rainfall on July 13.

Additionally, yellow alerts were issued for some other regions where moderate to heavy precipitation is expected. Residents in these states are advised to stay cautious and follow local advisories regarding weather and waterlogging.

Sunday’s morning showers brought smiles to many faces as the weather turned pleasant, perfect for a weekend outing or a relaxing time at home. However, the light rain also caused slight disruptions in some areas where waterlogging is common.

Many commuters had to navigate through slippery roads, and in places like Lajpat Nagar, Saket, and South Extension, minor traffic slowdowns were reported due to the wet conditions.

But overall, the rainfall was welcomed by citizens, especially after the recent stretch of hot and humid days that made it difficult to step out during daytime hours.

Citizens’ Reaction: A Mixed Bag

Social media was flooded with pictures and videos of the cloudy sky and light showers, with hashtags like #DelhiRains, #MonsoonMood, and #RainInDelhi trending locally. While some rejoiced at the change in weather, others remained concerned about the waterlogging and commuting challenges that often follow even light rain in the city.

One user posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Finally, some rain! Delhi feels breathable again.” Another remarked, “It’s raining but the roads are already full. Authorities need to step up drainage systems.”

Precautions to Take During Light Rains and Thunderstorms

Even though the rain is light, thunderstorms and lightning can be dangerous. Authorities advise citizens to avoid standing under trees or near electric poles during such conditions. It’s also wise to keep mobile devices and other electronics safe from sudden lightning surges.

People traveling in cars or bikes should drive slowly and avoid flooded roads. Wearing light and quick-drying clothes and carrying umbrellas is always a smart choice during this season.

Rainy Respite for Delhi, But Stay Updated

Sunday’s light rain brought temporary comfort and improved air quality to Delhi-NCR. The IMD’s forecast suggests more of these short spells in the coming days. While it’s not the full-fledged monsoon yet, this drizzle signals that relief from the summer heat is gradually on its way.

People in the region are advised to stay updated through IMD and CPCB alerts, especially if planning travel or outdoor activities. For now, Delhiites can enjoy the cooler air, occasional clouds, and brief drizzles that make the monsoon one of the most beloved seasons in the capital.
